During independent writing time I notice that Vincent is using the strategy of "stopping and thinking" and I take this opportunity to point this out to the class. This became the mid-workshop teaching point.
I noticed that Vincent was stopping and thinking in a way that was visually similar to the way I modeled "stop and visualize" during the mini lesson (finger on his forehead). I asked him to explain the thinking he was doing. I then asked his permission to share the ways in which he was working with the entire class to remind other students of this strategy.

I was wondering if I could just share with everyone how you've been stopping and thinking about what happened next in the story because you're an important part. Is that okay if I share that with everybody today? Thanks.
I just wanted to stop and share something great that I saw one writer doing. I stopped to have a conversation with him, really quick, just to ask him what he was doing. I walked buy Vincent, oh, and I just want to make sure I have everybody's attention. Dennis you can that you're ready to learn from one of your classmates and Elijah's ready to learn from another writer in the classroom. I just happened to be walking by Vincent and I saw him doing this. And so I asked him, Vincent, are you thinking about your story. And so he explained to me that he was stopping and thinking about what happened next. Before he writes it down, he's really thinking about what's happening and then he was talking me through the experience. And that's a really great way to do it and if you want to stop and think about what's coming next and then maybe quietly to yourself, say it out loud so that you can decide if that's how you want to write it down. That's a really good strategy. So today, in the next ten minutes while you're writing, if you want to stop and think about what's happening in your story next and then say it quietly to yourself or say it in a response group. That can help you get your thoughts going and get them down on your paper. We're now moving to independent work time and response group. So if anybody feels that they would like to help or would some help with their writing, now is the time that you can do that, during the ten minutes. |
